During the Winter Session of the Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) Assembly, on the 13th of December, the A.P. Disha Act was made official.
On the 12th of December, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) tabled the A.P. Disha Bill, 2019 for discussion, which got the majority and was approved.
The Bill was proposed for the security and safety of women and children. The Act was named in the memory of Disha, who was raped and murdered in Telangana.
According to the A.P. Disha Act, 2019, cases of atrocities against women must be heard and closed within 21 days and death penalty must be given in the required cases. The YSRCP also made amendments to the Andhra Pradesh Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2019 and the Andhra Pradesh Special Court for Specified Offences Against Women and Children Act, 2019.
M. Sucharitha, the Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh, tabled the Bill which would assure protection to women in the State.
The Nara Chandrababu Naidu led Telugu Desam Party (TDP) also welcomed the Bill and supported the same. He also urged the public to be conscious of the law and without hesitation, make sure it is enforced.
The Andhra Pradesh Disha Act, 2019 came into effect from the 13th of December.
