AP HC Reserves Verdict On Village Volunteers Role In Municipal Elections, Prevented By SEC

On the 2nd of March, the Andhra Pradesh High Court (HC) reviewed a petition filed challenging the orders of the State Election Commissioner (SEC.)

The State Election Commissioner N. Ramesh Kumar recently issued orders to keep ward volunteers away from Municipal elections duty.  The order was opposed by the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) which was later challenged in the HC.

The Village Volunteer, Ward Volunteer, Village Secretariat, Ward Secretariat Chief Secretary M. Ajay Jain filed a Lunch Motion Petition in the High Court on the 1st of March against the SEC orders.

In regard to this, the HC bench reviewed the matter and reserved its order. It was a lunch motion petition hearing. 

While the judgement for the ward volunteers have been reserved, the Court dismissed the SEC’s directive to seize the cell phones of the volunteers.  The bench said it was unilateral, unconstitutional and against the provisions of the Panchayati Raj Act.

The municipal elections in Andhra Pradesh are all set to take place on the 10th of March. 

The results of the Andhra Pradesh Municipal elections would be announced on the evening of the 14th of March.

The major parties contesting the A.P., Municipal elections are the YSRCP, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the JanaSena Party.
