AP HC’s Verdict On SEC’s Mobile Ban For Ward Volunteers During Municipal Elections

On the 6th of March, the Andhra Pradesh High Court (HC) announced its verdict for a petition.

Recently, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) filed a petition against the State Election Commissioner’s (SEC) orders. According to the SEC orders, ward volunteers are not allowed to use their phones till the end of the upcoming Municipal elections in Andhra Pradesh. However, the A.P., High Court made some changes to these orders and asked the volunteers to deposit mobile phones to an officer assigned by the Municipal commissioners.

The High Court on the 5th of March suspended the SEC Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar’s imposed restrictions. A division bench of the High Court also said that the volunteers can use the mobile phones whenever necessary but under the supervision of a designated officer.

The imposed orders would be applicable on all volunteers on duty for the Municipal elections.

The Andhra Pradesh Municipal elections for 12 corporations and 75 municipalities would be held on the 10th of March. The major parties contesting the elections are, the YSRCP, the TDP, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the JanaSena Party.

The results of the Municipal elections would be announced on the 14th of March.
