On the 11th of January, the Andhra Pradesh High Court (HC) reviewed a petition filed against the Gram Panchayat Elections.
After the State Election Commission (SEC) of A.P., announced the Gram Panchayat elections scheduled, the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government moved the HC.
In regard to this, the HC reviewed the petition and took a decision on the panchayat elections.
The HC cancelled the scheduled elections dates released by the SEC on the 8th of January.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court also made it clear that public health was more important than elections. In the wake of the Novel Coronavirus and the upcoming vaccination drive, the elections should not be held.
The Attorney General has argued on behalf of the Government for two hours. The AG explained to the court that the elections would affect the corona vaccination drive.
On the other hand, the SEC has reportedly decided to go to the Divisional Bench in the wake of the latest judgment by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
On the night of the 8th of January, Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, the State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Andhra Pradesh announced the Gram Panchayat elections. The elections were scheduled to be held in four phases, beginning from the 5th of February
However, now it has been halted until further notice.
