Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) and his Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government is all set to provide high speed internet to all villages.

On the 26th of April, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy conducted a meeting with his cabinet ministers regarding the same. During the meeting, he directed the officials to be prepared to provide uninterrupted unlimited high band internet network to all villages. In addition, the State Chief Minister asked the officials to increase the internet capacity to 20 GB and if necessary to provide unlimited free internet. The meeting came at a time, when the State is witnessing a second wave of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 and the majority of people came back to their native villages and are doing work from home (WFH.)

During the meeting, the officials were also asked to prepare an action plan to provide internet connection facility to 31 lakh houses in newly constructed YSR Jagananna colonies.

The new network and set up for internet services would be laid with underground cables to avoid power cut or disturbance during cyclones. The underground cable networks would be set up in 108 villages.

In addition, the State Government is also planning to set up village digital libraries for these villages. The proposal is for six computers in each library.

The aforementioned arrangements and internet services to the villages would be done by 2023. The Energy Secretary Nagulapalli Srikanth said cable works are already underway and will be completed by March 2023.

Briefing about the same, Mr. Nagulapalli said 14,671 km of aerial cable has been laid in 3,642 villages of 307 mandals. In addition, the Panchayat Raj Commissioner Girija Shankar said digital libraries are being constructed with an area of 690 square feet and the construction cost of each library is estimated at Rs. 16 lakh, while 20 seats are being set up in each library.

Meanwhile, the State Government is also planning to provide free laptops to the students who opted for the Amma Vodi welfare scheme. According to the Amma Vodi scheme, the State Government would give financial assistance to mothers in the State for the education of their children. The scheme was launched by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on the 9th of January 2020. Approximately, 61,271 schools and 3,083 colleges are under the scheme and 81,72,224 students from Class 1 to Class 12 would be provided education under the scheme.

However, adding to it, under the scheme, students of class IX to XII and degree colleges would now get free laptops for their studies.

Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said, “The mothers will have an option to take a laptop worth Rs. 25,000-27,000. It will come with a three-year warranty and will be replaced within a week in case of a breakdown.”

He said laptop service centres should be available in every revenue division.

The arrangements and work for the scheme is being supervised by the School Education Principal Secretary Buditi Rajashekar. He said options are being collected from students for the Amma Vodi scheme. They would also provide two models of laptops with high end versions to engineering students.
