N. Chandrababu Naidu, the President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) addressed the AP Assembly session on the 4th day and supported the proposal of converting the government schools in AP to English medium ones.

Mr. Naidu, on the 12th of December, said he would not oppose the proposal of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) to make English the medium of instruction in government schools.  However, he put forth a condition—the State Government must give an option to the parents and students to choose the medium of instruction.

The TDP President said the Party is not against English as the medium of instruction.  However, he added the parents of the students in the State should be given a choice to select the medium of instruction, instead of it being imposed.

The Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy led YSRCP recently announced English would be made mandatory for pupils studying between class 1 and class 6.

Mr. Naidu also stated the idea of making English the medium of instruction in government schools is not new as the TDP, during its reign, decided to introduce the same for 33 % schools in AP.

Adding to it, Chandrababu Naidu further gave a few suggestions to the YSRCP Government to ensure the implementation of the rule is effective.  He said it may be better if the Government trains teachers and provides students with books in English, instead of imposing the language.

English would be made the medium of instruction in government schools from the next academic year, which begins in January 2020.
