The ongoing dispute over the Krishna River water continued with the intervention of the Supreme Court (SC.) On the 2nd of August, the Top Court reviewed a petition filed by the Andhra Pradesh Government

During the court proceedings, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana asked the two counterparts, the A.P., Government and the Telangana Government to resolve the matter. The CJI who belongs to the Telugu states, rescued himself from hearing the petition and said, “I don’t want to hear this matter legally. I belong to both the states. If the matter can be settled in mediation, please do that. We can help with that. Otherwise I will transfer this to another Bench.”

However, asking to resolve the matter between the two Telugu states peacefully, the CJI referred to mediation.

While Advocate Dushyant Dave appeared for the Andhra Pradesh Government, Advocate C.S. Vaidyanathan appeared for the Telangana Government.

With this, the Supreme Court bench left the plea for further discussion on the 4th of August, and both the Telangana and the A.P., Government agreed to this.

Meanwhile, after the Apex Court hearing, the Telangana Chief Minister Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao commented on the ongoing issue. He said, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) led A.P., Government is doing ‘dadagiri,’ in the Krishna River water issue and constructing illegal projects at the River banks. Citing the problems of Telangana, CM KCR said, due to these illegal projects, the people of Telangana would face serious consequences and drinking water and water crisis issues ahead.

It is to be noted, the Krishna River water dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is continuing over the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation work. The illegal construction and projects on the banks of the Krishna and the Godavari rivers by both the Telangana Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government is a long pending matter, which intensified in the past few months. The matter intensified with a war of words between the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy led Andhra Pradesh Government and the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Government, seeking intervention of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) and the Central Government and now the Supreme Court.
