V. Vara Prasad, the 14th Magistrate of the Ranga Reddy District Court at LB Nagar, was arrested, today morning. He was alleged of corruption and of owning a disproportionate amount of assets.

Earlier, a petition was filed against V. Vara Prasad in the High Court of Hyderabad, accusing him of corruption. According to the petition, he allegedly owns assets worth Rs. 3 crores, which are not proportionate to his known sources of income.

The High Court remanded him and sent him to judicial custody till the 28th of November. The Court also ordered the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Telangana to launch a probe to look into the matter.

The ACB officials raided places in Hyderabad, Sircilla and Maharashtra, yesterday. The search continued for 24 hours and today, the accused was arrested.

The raids were conducted in Prasad’s residence at Gaddiannaram in Saroornagar and Izzathnagar in Kondapur of Hyderabad. The residences of Prasad’s relatives were also raided. A total of 12 places were raided by the ACB officials, 6 in Hyderabad, 3 in Sircilla, Telangana and 2 in Maharashtra.

The ACB officials recovered several documents, bank statements, expenditure bills, etc., as evidence.

The ACB officials said, “The Judge was found to be in possession of assets, whose market value is more than 3 crore, which is disproportionate to his known sources of income.”

In addition, they said, Mr. Prasad was booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The case is still being investigated. V. Vara Prasad was shifted to Central Prison, Chanchalguda.
