On the 1st of July, the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) wrote to the Telangana Government regarding Nagarjuna Sagar water usage.

Recently, the Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Government lodged a complaint with the KRMB, saying the Telangana Government is using excess water from the Nagarjuna Sagar project. In regard to the complaint, the KRMB wrote to the Telangana Irrigation Engineer in Chief (ENC) asking for an explanation and to reduce the usage. It also directed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government to exempt 9.9 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water from Nagarjuna Sagar so far from the total allocations.

The Andhra Pradesh Government said, the Telangana Government used 13.4 TMC of water for power generation from the 26th of February till the 31st of May in 2021.

However, the Telangana Government denied the allegations and claims of Andhra Pradesh that they would face drinking water shortage. In addition, the Telangana State Government even filed a counter complaint with the KRMB and the Union Jal Shakti Ministry. In the complaint, the TRS Government claimed that the projects in A.P., under the Pennar basin have adequate water reserves that could meet the drinking water needs of the State and it is not dependent on the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar projects for drinking water at present.

The Telangana Government claimed that AP has projects which have storage capacity of 350 tmc ft in Pennar basin, of which there are 120 tmc ft of reserves at present which are more than sufficient to meet drinking water needs of that state. The Telangana officials said, there are adequate reserves in Somasila, Kandaleru, Owk and Velugodu reservoirs in the State.

The dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is continuing over the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation work. The illegal construction and projects on the banks of the Krishna and the Godavari rivers by the Telangana Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government is a long pending matter.

Concluding the letter, the KRMB asked the Telangana Government to submit the details regarding the directed changes. In regard to this, a meeting has also been scheduled on the 7th of July. As per sources, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) led A.P., Government officials, TRS Government officials and KRMB officials would be present at the meeting.
