The Supreme Court (SC) agreed to hear the Andhra Pradesh Capital Amaravati Case on the 23rd of February.

According to sources, the Apex Court agreed to list the case over a petition filed by an advocate Niranjan Reddy on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh Government.  In the filed petition, Niranjan Reddy urged the Top Court to review the matter quickly.

In 2019, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government proposed three capitals for the Telugu State of Andhra Pradesh, instead of the previously decided Amaravati as the sole capital.  During the Assembly session in December 2019, Mr. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, proposed Visakhapatnam as the Executive Capital, Kurnool as the Legislative Capital and Amaravati as the Administrative Capital.

However, the proposal did not go well with the citizens of Amaravati, especially villagers, who sacrifice their lands for the development of the city as the only capital of Andhra Pradesh.  Notably, after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the then ruling government led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) announced Amaravati to be developed as the Capital City of Andhra Pradesh.

However, before implementation, in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, the TDP lost against the YSRCP.  After coming into power, the YSRCP proposed three capitals, claiming irregularities and land scams in capital development during the TDP’s rule.  Protesting against the proposal, the citizens and farmers of Amravati staged protests and even moved the Andhra Pradesh High Court against the three capitals’ proposal.

Reviewing the petitions, the Andhra Pradesh High Court, issued a stay on the development of the three state capitals of Andhra Pradesh, which was like a hurdle for the ruling YSRCP, eager to shift the government administration to Visakhapatnam.

Disappointed with the judgement of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy led YSRCP Government to move the Apex Court, demanding a judgement on the pending issue.

The Supreme Court would review the petition of the Andhra Pradesh Capital issue on the 23rd of February.
