The Government of India (GoI,) on the 29th of June, ranked Uttar Pradesh as the top State in the Country in building affordable houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY.)
What is PMAY?
The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojna: Housing for All is one of the schemes initiated by the Central Government in 2015.
The PMAY is divided into two schemes, one is PMAY (Urban [U]) for the urban poor and the other is the PMAY (Gramin [G]) for the rural poor. According to the scheme, affordable houses will be provided to the poor people, with a target of building 20 million houses by the 31st of March 2022.
Those belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) can apply for the scheme. This includes rural people, poor people belonging to villages and senior citizens in their 70s.
According to the PMAY scheme, women will be the owner of the house provided under the scheme.
The State Urban Development Agency (SUDA) of Uttar Pradesh so far created 12,44,675 Beneficiary Led Housing (BLH) and 13,41,550 Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) in the State.
Under the Beneficiary led Construction component of the scheme, any household with land or a house can claim a subsidy amount of Rs. 1.5 lakhs from the Government and can construct or extend his home area.
On the other hand, Alternative Financing Procurement (AFP) projects are taken up by a public private partnership (PPP) which builds houses. In these AFP constructions, 35 % of the houses are reserved for the EWS under the PMAY.
In 2018, Andhra Pradesh stood first and did an excellent job building affordable houses under the PMAY scheme. This year, Andhra Pradesh was ranked 2nd, after Uttar Pradesh.
