Vijaya Bapineedu, a Telugu film director, passed away, on the 12th of February, at his residence in MLA Quarters, Hyderabad.

Mr. Bapineedu, 82 years old, was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for the past 4 years and was undergoing treatment for the same at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad.

Born in Chataparru village of Andhra Pradesh, Gutta Bapineedu Choudhary, also known as Vijaya Bapineedu, achieved success and fame in Tollywood. He started his career as as an editor of several magazines like Bommarillu, Vijaya and Indian Film. Later, he became a film director and gave Tollywood several superhit movies.

Some superhit films by Bapineedu are Khaidi No. 786 (1988,) Dabbu Dabbu Dabbu (1981,) Maga Maharaju (1983) and Magadheerudu (1986.)

Vijaya Bapineedu also directed the blockbuster Gang Leader (1991,) starring Megastar Chiranjeevi. The movie was seen as the biggest hit of Chiranjeevi’s career and was later dubbed in Hindi and named Aaj Ka Gundaraj (1992.)

Various Telugu actors and directors expressed grief over the demise of Vijaya Bapineedu.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, also conveyed his condolences to the family of Bapineedu.

The last rites of Vijaya Bapineedu will be performed, on the 14th of February, after his daughter, who lives in the United States returns to India.
