Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (AP,) on the 5th of November, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the allocation of coal blocks to Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGENCO) thermal power plants.

Mr. Reddy requested the Central Government to allocate the Mandakini coal block and Talcheru coalfields in Odisha to the APGENCO thermal power plants.

Jagan Mohan Reddy wrote, “Prior to the State bifurcation, the linkage quantities particularly the supplies from M/s Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) was being adjusted between all the thermal stations of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh to run the units as per the requirement. After state bifurcation, the SCCL mines were entirely given to Telangana State and new state of Andhra Pradesh is not given a share in coal reserves; it is entirely dependent on coal linkages from other states. This has compromised the energy security of the new State of AP and the 24×7 power supply.”

Jagan Mohan Reddy also said the APGENCO thermal plants can generate 5,010 MW, but due to the coal supply being low, the power generation is not as expected.

The AP Government submitted a letter regarding the same to the Ministry of Coal and urged it to allocate coal to the thermal power plants.

According to Jagan Mohan Reddy, APGENCO is going to add 1,600 MW of capacity from March 2020.

Stay tuned for further updates.
