The Member of Parliament (MP) of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Vijayasai Reddy met with the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The meeting was held on the 23rd of July in Delhi, regarding the ongoing Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation issue.

In March, the Central Government announced disinvestment in VSP and privatisation of the Steel Plant. Privatisation of the VSP, also known as the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL,) is a major issue of concern for the people of Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Vijayasai Reddy submitted a memorandum to Ms. Nirmala Sitaraman and urged her to withdraw the privatisation orders. He justified the withdrawal request and said the 30 years old Steel Plant is related to the sentiments of the people of Andhra Pradesh. Privatising the VSP would hurt the people of A.P., especially 35,000 employees and their families, who are dependent on the plant for their livelihood.

Highlighting the reason behind the losses, the YSRCP MP said the VSP is facing losses due to the lack of mines. Therefore, he requested the Central Government to allot mines to the RINL and help the plant in the crisis, instead of privatising the public steel plant.

Besides MP Vijayasai Reddy, the Visakha Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee leaders also were present during the meeting yesterday.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC,) the Communist Party of India (CPI) and others extended their support to the YSRCP, urging them to withdraw the privatisation orders of the plant.

In addition, the steel plant workers in Delhi also proposed a protest regarding the same on the 2nd and the 3rd of August.
