The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) won the Greater Visakhapatnam Standing Committee elections.

On the 27th of July, the Party celebrated the grand victory, by winning all the 10 municipal Corporators seats and forming a Standing Committee headed by a Mayor.

The Standing Committee plays an important role in the functioning of the civic body. The elected YSRCP members of the Standing Committee include Vurukuti Ramachandra Rao, Guligindala Lavanya, Chenna Janakiram, Tippala Vamsi Reddy, Dowlapalli Yedukondala Rao, Prasad Vavilapalli, Mummana Demudu, Molli Lakshmi, Mandapati Sunita and K.V.N. Sashikala.

The role of Standing Committee, which is headed by the Mayor, ranges from sanctioning of works and release of payments to contractors to looking into the functioning of the civic body, including issues of the employees.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Standing Committee elections were held on the morning of the 27th of July. It ended in a few hours and the counting of votes was conducted in the evening of the same day.

A total of 67 corporators exercised their right to vote in the Standing Committee election. Of the total voters, 57 are members of the YSRCP, 4 are inCongress party independent corporators, 3 belong to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) and 1 member each were of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) the JanaSena Party and the Communist Party of India (CPI.) In March, the GVMC’s 98 ward conducted the Civic Body elections, where majority of seats were secured by the YSRCP, marking their victory in Tuesday’s elections too.

With the majority of votes, from the 57 YSRCP corporators, the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy led Party won the Standing Committee elections.

Minister Muthamsetti Srinivasa Rao and YSRCP senior leaders Ummareddy Venkateshwar were elated over the victory in this election. YSRCP criticized TDP for competing despite having no absolute majority and said, “These results proved that people trust the leadership of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.” He said, “We don’t understand on what ground TDP had fielded its candidates. From the voting pattern it was clear that there was some cross voting in favour of the YSRCP from the TDP bench.”

With this, the YSRCP believe to have a huge victory in the Zila Parishad Territory Constituency (ZPTC) and the Mandal Parishad Territory Constituency (MPTC) elections.
