Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi visited Medchal, Telangana, for a public meeting, yesterday. The meeting started at 6:00 P.M., and it was Sonia Gandhi’s first public meet after the formation of Telangana.

Sonia Gandhi, addressing the public, criticised the K.Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) led Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS.) She also spoke about the problems the Congress faced after they made the decision of separating the State.

Ms. Sonia said, “It was not an easy task. It was no small decision. But former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party decided to form Telangana State.”

Criticising the role of KCR as the Chief Minister of Telangana, Sonia Gandhi said, “Chief Minister Rao has cared only for himself and his own people leaving the child to suffer. Dalits, adivasis, minorities, backward classes, women and students were all neglected. The Chief Minister should tell us what promises he made to them and he kept.”

Sonia Gandhi also addressed some other issues related to farmers, agriculture and jobs in Telangana. She said, “The TRS government failed to fulfil the aspirations of the people of the state.” In addition, Sonia Gandhi raised the question of the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme by the TRS. In light of this, Ms. Gandhi said, people were not provided the benefits of the scheme and unemployment still persists in Telangana.

Ms. Gandhi ended her speech and appealed to the public to vote for the Congress and its alliance parties. The Congress formed an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and the Communist Party of India (CPI.)

Soon after Ms. Gandhi finished her speech, Rahul Gandhi, President, Congress, addressed the audience and expressed his views about the KCR led TRS. He stated, “Only one man ran Telangana for the last five years. He did whatever came to his mind for his family.”

The Telangana Assembly elections are scheduled on the 7th of December and the results will be announced on the 11th of December.

Rahul Gandhi will start his campaign for the Telangana Assembly elections with Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP chief and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, from next week onward.
