On Friday, Andhra Pradesh’s State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) sent out notices to the principal secretary, medical and health ordering a detailed report regarding the mysterious death of a 13 year old girl.

On August 17th, K. Chenchu Lakshmi residing in Yanadi Colony in Tadepalli died hours after she had her Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine.

The MR vaccine is generally given to children between the age groups of nine months and 15 years to prevent measles and rubella.

The NGO Balala Hakkula Sangham went after the SHRC and accused the officials of medical negligence.

News channels reported the girl was given the MR vaccine at home when health workers visited but by late evening she started shivering and was declared brought dead to the hospital.

A complaint was filed at the Tadepalli police station by the girl’s parents who blame the officials for their daughter’s death.

Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare, Sujatha Sarma was quoted saying, “So far, 80 lakh children in AP have been administered the vaccine, no complaint has been received. In all, 3.34 crore people in the country have been given the vaccine.”

The case has been filed under section 174 of Cr PC for suspicious death and the body has been sent for post mortem.
