16 Districts of Bihar Affected by Floods

On Thursday, the floods in Bihar worsened and the death toll increased to 119. The floods have affected 16 districts and 98 lakh lives.

On Wednesday, the death toll was 72 and 14 districts were submerged and 73 lakh lives were disrupted.

Khagaria and Saharsa were the districts that were affected during the day. Special Secretary of the Disaster Management Department Anirudh Kumar reported, Araria district accounted for 23 deaths, followed by Sitamarhi (12), Kisanganj, East Champaran, West Champaran and Supual (11 each,) Madhubani and Katihar (7 each,) Madhepura and Purnea (5 each,) Darbhanga and Saharsa (4 each,) Gopalganj and Khagaria (3 each) and Sheohar (2.)”

The health department in Bihar has sent out an emergency toll free number ‘104’ to provide information regarding the floods.

Principal Secretary State Disaster Management Department Pratyay Amrit reported that 3.59 lakh people were rescued and taken to safer locations.

The government has also sent out food packets to be airdropped in areas that are submerged in water.

For relief and rescue missions, NDRF sent out 114 boats, SDRF sent 92 boats and the army deployed 70 boats to inundated areas. The floods have damaged 124 roads including national highways causing issues for commuters.

Rural Works Department Principal Secretary Bipin Kumar reported that nearly 219 hand pumps in Kisanganj and 222 in Araria have been disinfected to provide clean drinking water to the citizens.

East Central Railways released a statement that revealed 39 trains had to be canceled due to the floods. The 12235 Dibrugarh to New Delhi Rajdhani and 12424 New Delhi to Dibrugarh Rajdhani are among the canceled trains that will remain nonfunctional until the 20th of August.
