Twenty states and union territories joined the pan India helpline number, 112, the officials responsible for the helpline stated, on the 19th of April.

To be used for major emergencies and by people going through grievances, this new number is an integration of the Police helpline (100,) the fire helpline (101) and the women helpline (1090) numbers.

Similar to the 911 emergency number used by the residents of the United States, this helpline is going to register every type of complaint under one umbrella.

According to an official from the Home Ministry, “The 20 states and UTs include Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Jammu and Kashmir and Nagaland.”

The number can be used by pushing the panic trigger on smartphones. The moment a person in danger presses the panic button, the call goes through to the 112 helpline. People using smartphones can also call 112 directly or press the Power button thrice to place a call to 112.

By tracking the location of the phones, officials can find out where the person in danger is located, thereby easing the process of providing help. The call gets transferred to the Emergency Response Centres (ERCs) in the member states and unions, post which, help is sent out.

If the person is using a normal phone and not a smartphone, one could long press the number 5 or the number 9 and the call will be placed.

If the call isn’t going through the right way, people can log onto the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) website and register their complaint there.

To simplify things further, people can download the 112 app, which is available all over India.

With apps like this, the Government of India is doing everything it can to increase the safety of its citizens.

Stay tuned for more updates.
