A Delhi Court sentenced gangster Abu Salem to 7 years rigorous imprisonment. This comes after Salem was found guilty of extortion. In 2002, Salem demanded Rs. 5 crores as protection money from a businessman in Delhi.

The extortion case was lodged in Delhi and alleged Salem demanded Rs. 5 crores from Ashok Gupta as protection money. Mr. Gupta is a businessman who lives in Greater Kailash in South Delhi.

The Court heard the arguments from the prosecutor and defense lawyers before finding Salem guilty. The Court convicted the gangster late last month.

Additional Sessions Judge Tarun Sehrawat found Salem guilty and said the quantum of the sentence would be decided later. The Court announced today that Salem will serve 7 years in prison for extortion.

Abu Salem started as a driver for the Dawood Ibrahim gang in Mumbai. Salem slowly rose the ranks when he hired boys from his village to execute shootouts. Abu Salem would then send the boys back to the village in Uttar Pradesh. The boys remained untraced by the Mumbai police while investigating the murder cases.

Salem is serving sentences for a number of cases including the Mumbai serial blasts in 1993.
