More than 100 security officials were killed, on the 21st of January, in an explosion in Maidan Wardak province, located to the west of Kabul, Afghanistan.

According to sources, Taliban insurgents attacked the military forces at the training centre of the National Directorate Security (NDS) in Kabul. The terrorists crashed a military Humvee (a car) with explosives into a military check post and triggered the explosion inside the center. Right after the blast, two gunmen entered the campus and shot several members of the NDS.

A senior Defence Ministry official said, “We have information that 126 people have been killed in the explosion inside the military training centre, eight special commandoes (commandos) are among the dead.”

Sharif Hotak, a member of the Provincial Council of the Maidan Wardak province, said, “Many more were killed. Several bodies were transported to Kabul city and many injured were transferred to hospitals in Kabul.” He further added, “The government was hiding the accurate casualty figures to prevent a further dip in morale of the Afghan forces. The explosion was very powerful. The whole building has collapsed.”

However, the number of casualties is not yet confirmed by the officials, as per the orders given by the Government to avoid bringing down the morale of the military forces.

The office of Ashraf Ghani, the President of Afghanistan, released a statement which says, “enemies of the country had carried out the attack and had killed and wounded a number of our beloved and honest sons.”

It is said, the Taliban is responsible for the massive explosion, as the group wants to reinforce strict Islamic laws in Afghanistan and root out the international forces from Afghanistan.
