On the 5th of May, a suicide bomber from the Taliban terror outfit killed several police officials in northern Afghanistan. The suicide bomber detonated his explosives laden car at a police headquarters in Afghanistan post severe clashes between gunmen and security forces in the area.
According to reports, the suicide bomber killed atleast atleast 20 people and wounded another 35 people. Seven Taliban members dressed in police uniform rushed through the hole caused by the explosion and started firing. When the situation was finally quelled, at least 35 people were wounded and 20 police officials were killed.
Abdul Qayoum Mubariz, a police officer who was a part of the scene, said in a statement, “about 25 police officers, almost all of them unarmed, were waiting in line at a bank in the compound when the Humvee exploded.”
According to Abdul, some soldiers were eating and carrying their plates of food inside when the attackers stormed into the police station.
A Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attacks and said
five not seven, people had given up their lives for this attack.
The war between the Afghans and the Taliban has been going on for several months now, with attacks like these almost becoming a regular affair. Either side is trying to seek leverage during the ongoing peace talks between the United States and the Taliban in Doha, Qatar.
This fresh attack was a response to a peace offer issued by Afghanistan President, Ashraf Ghani, on the 2nd of May. Rejecting the offer, the Taliban retaliated, sending a clear message.
According to the officials, all the Taliban attackers were killed by Sunday night.
