The Election Commission (EC) of Andhra Pradesh, on the 1st of May, announced to conduct re elections for the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats at 5 centres in Andhra Pradesh (AP.)

The 5 centres where the elections will be held again include 1 booth in Prakasam district and 2 each in Nellore and Guntur, AP.

The decision was taken after the recommendation of Gopal Krishna Dwivedi, the Chief Electoral Officer of AP.

Mr. Dwivedi, on the 16th of April, sent a recommendation letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) with a demand of conducting re elections in AP.

Mr. Dwivedi considered the complaint of N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, who demanded the re elections in the State.

Mr. Naidu said, the EC of Andhra Pradesh failed to conduct smooth polls, following which he and his Party, the Telugu Desam Party wants re elections in the State.

Mr. Naidu wrote a letter to Gopal Krishna Dwivedi and said, during the AP elections, approximately 380 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) malfunctioned and 25 violence cases were registered in AP. In addition to this, Siddha Bhaskar Reddy, a Telugu Desam Party member, lost his life and several TDP workers got injured.

On the 1st of May, the ECI decided to conduct re elections for the Lok Sabha and the Assembly seats. The decision was taken after the Returning Officers (RO) of the respective centre’s submitted reports and highlighted the same issues mentioned by Naidu during the AP elections.

S.K. Rudol, the Principal Secretary of the ECI wrote a letter to Gopal Krishna Dwivedi and said the ECI took the decision of re elections after reviewing RO’s reports, facts and material circumstances.

The constituencies where the elections will be conducted are Narsaraopet Assembly and Parliamentary constituency, Guntur Parliamentary and Guntur West Assembly constituencies, the Yerragondapalem Assembly constituency and Ongole Parliamentary constituency.

The re elections in all the 5 constituencies will be held on the 6th of May.

On the 11th of April, Andhra Pradesh conducted its Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, however, the elections were not conducted smoothly.

The re elections are said to be a good chance for the major parties in AP to win the elections.

The major parties which contested the AP Assembly and Lok Sabha elections were the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) the TDP and the JanaSena Party.
