Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister of India, on the 14th of May, took to Twitter and reacted sarcastically on the case against Priyanka Sharma, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activist.

Mr. Jaitley said, “Humour, wit, sarcasm survive in a free society. They have no place in autocracies. Dictators laugh at people. They don’t like people laughing at them. Bengal, today is a case in point.”

Mr. Jaitley, who is famous for his wise unbiased words, shared his point against the Priyanka Sharma case, which according to him is a question of equality and freedom of speech.

Priyanka Sharma, an activist of the BJP was arrested last week for morphing pictures of Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed a case and said, Priyanka allegedly morphed picture of Ms. Banerjee with Priyanka Chopra’s recent MET Gala look of 2019.

The image went viral all over the social media platforms, following which she was arrested from her residence.

The Kolkata Police entered her house and arrested her for the charges registered by the TMC and kept under judicial custody.

On the 13th of May, the case was then discussed in the West Bengal High Court and Ms. Sharma was released on bail.

After Ms. Sharma was given bail, she immediately moved the Supreme Court (SC) against her arrest.

The bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Sanjiv Khanna heard the matter, on the 14th of May and granted her bail. The SC bench also asked her to apologise to Mamata Banerjee, the President of the TMC.

Though the lawyer of Ms. Sharma argued against the need for apology, the court strictly ordered her to apologise.

The SC also issued a notice to the West Bengal Police for arresting the Party activist in such manner.

Arun Jaitley’s tweet gained a lot of negative and positive response regarding the matter which highlights right to freedom.

His words also showcase, how political parties are using the freedom of speech and action with the social media platforms to humiliate and defame the opposition parties to win the Lok Sabha elections.

The ultimate fight to form the Government of India (GoI) between the BJP and the Indian National Congress (INC) began on the 11th of April and will continue till the 19th of May.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections deciding which party will be forming the GoI will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.

Stay tuned for further updates.
