Cauvery Verdict: Tamil Nadu Locals Block Toll Gates And After Affects

The Supreme Court gave the verdict for the much awaited Cauvery Water Dispute Case. But to Tamil Nadu’s bad luck Karnataka was given additional water while Tamil Nadu lost 15 tmc ft of water from their original allocation. The verdict has caused ripples in the two states.

This has caused unrest in Tamil Nadu as commuters moving from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu have not been allowed to pass. Commuters have complained that locals in the South Indian State are forcefully stopping vehicles prohibiting them from entering the toll gates.

Political analyst and professor at Karnataka University Harish Ramaswamy gave his valuable insight on the verdict. He said, “It should be in favour of Congress, because Chief Minister Siddaramaiah refused to budge an inch following the earlier Supreme Court order in 2016. He took a risk in the Legislative Assembly, and said that even if it means contempt of court, he won’t give water when people don’t have it.”

He further explained BJPs condition in Karnataka, “BJP has consistently flopped this time, in case of Mahadayi and Cauvery. Theirs was a judgemental and leadership error. Politically it’s their loss. If they think only Hindutva will pay them dividends, it is going to be tough. Since it is a pro farmer verdict, JD(S) will tend to gain. And in the old Mysore region, it will be a close fight for JD(S) and Congress.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seemed taken aback after the verdict was in his favor. While presenting the State Budget today many questioned his take on the verdict to which the CM said he would analyse the verdict and then make a statement.

While Karnataka celebrates with more water, Tamil Nadu’s political parties start the blame game. The DMK slammed AIADMK State Government for the SC verdict. The opposition demanded Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palaniswamy should resign from his post.

If in case Karnataka was the one to lose the Cauvery battle, the BJP party would have jumped at Congress’ throat. But this also means BJP might lose its strong hold of voters with the Cauvery Dispute verdict being a clear win for the Congress party.
