CBI Charges Pune’s NDA Principal With Corruption

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charged the Principal of the National Defense Academy (NDA) in Pune. The Principal Om Prakash Shukla, and a few teachers from the academy in Pune’s Khadakwasla were charged with corruption in appointments.

Om Prakash Shukla is charged along with the Math, Chemistry and Political Science professors. They are being charged with cheating, corruption and criminal conspiracy.

The offices and homes of the principal and others were raided by the CBI. Dr. Shukla is one of the senior most NDA professors in India. He was appointed as the principal in 2011. The alleged corruption in appointments started when Shukla applied for the principal post in 2007.

According to the CBI investigators, the teachers were involved in tampering with the Academic Performance Indicators (API.) The API is a measure of the academic record of candidates qualified to be NDA professors. The CBI found the teachers were forging documents to hire teachers without the required years of experience.

The CBI stated, “Dr. Om Prakash Shukla falsely claimed exaggerated experience of teaching and research in his applications to UPSC for the post of Professor in NDA in 2007 and for the post of principal in 2011.”

The investigators further added, “The false and exaggerated teaching experience claimed by Dr. Shukla was not verified by the (defense ministry) before he was appointed.”

NDA teachers are appointed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC.) The accused Principal and professors allegedly sent less qualified candidates to the UPSC with forged documents for approval.
