Congress: Karnataka Might Have Two Deputy Chief Ministers

Congress Chief G. Parameshwara stated Karnataka might have two deputy chief ministers. The final decision would be made by the Central leadership after a meeting with the JD(S) Chief H.D. Kumaraswamy.

D.K. Shivakumar a Congress leader confirmed Kumaraswamy would take his CM oath alone on Wednesday. The remaining cabinet will take their oath after the trust vote. The trust vote is likely to be held in the Karnataka Assembly on Wednesday.

Due to the last minute alliance between the Congress and the JD(S) the former will pick the Deputy Chief Minister. Sources stated the post will be given to Congress Chief Parameshwara. However, the JD(S) has not ruled out the possibility of two deputy chief ministers to balance the scale between the two parties.

On Saturday, BJP’s B.S. Yeddyurappa resigned from his CM position just before the floor test. The BJP was called on to form the Government in Karnataka and given time to prove their majority in the Assembly. However, Yeddyurappa was sure of losing the trust vote and decided to resign in advance.

After the resignation was filed the Congress and JD(S) finalized the details of distribution of power.

The voting for the 222 seats was held last week and one of the constituency’s polling was canceled after the BJP candidate suddenly passed away. The BJP party secured 104 seats and one independent seat support while the majority required to form a government in 112 seats.

The Congress secured 77 seats and the JD(S) won 39 seats and decided to form an alliance to form a coalition Government. However, the decision left for the Karnataka Governor from BJP decided to give his party the opportunity to prove their majority. The Governor initially gave the BJP 15 days to get the required trust vote but the Supreme Court intervened. The Apex Court ordered the trust vote happen in 24 hours on Friday.
