M.I. Shanavas, a Congress leader and Member of Parliament of Kerala’s Wayanad constituency, passed away, today, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The demise of Mr. Shanavas took place around 1:30 A.M., on Wednesday.

M.I. Shanavas, one of the 3 working presidents of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC,) underwent a liver transplant at the Rela Medical and Research Centre in Chromepet, Chennai on the 2nd of November. He was receiving treatment for the same since the past few weeks.

Mr. Shanavas started his political career as a student activist of the Kerala Student Union (KSU.) He did not win a seat in Assembly elections thrice (1987, 1991 and 1996.) After failing to win the elections, he came back strong and went on to win the elections for the Wayanad constituency twice, in 2009 and 2014, with a margin of 1,53,439 and 20,870 respectively.

Mr. Shanavas’s body will be brought to Cochin, today afternoon. His funeral is expected to take place around 10:00 A.M., on Thursday, at Thottathum Padi Juma Masjid.

M.I. Shanavas was one of the trustworthy and admired leaders of the Congress party. Political leaders such as Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and conveyed their condolences to Mr. Shanavas’s family.
