Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA,) on the 18th of June, has conducted a meeting at her residence in Delhi.

During the meeting, Ms. Gandhi has discussed about the strategy of the Indian National Congress (INC) in the Parliament sessions.

INC leaders such as P. Chidambaram, K. Suresh, Anand Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jairam Ramesh and Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary were present at the meeting.

According to sources, the INC leaders also decided to discuss major issues such as ‘one nation, one election’ and triple talaq at the Lok Sabha session.

Despite being the largest opposition party against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) the INC fell short of two Lok Sabha seats and could not hold the status of the opposition party in the Lok Sabha.

Since the INC no longer holds the opposition party status, the Party will take a stand about several issues in the Parliamentary session and join hands with like minded parties to form a majority.

On the 17th of June, during the first day of the 17th Lok Sabha session, Anand Sharma, a Member of Parliament (MP) of the INC, said, “The government should end the ordinance culture and respect parliamentary process, important bills should be sent to Parliamentary Committees and then discussed in the house too, before being passed as laws.”

During today’s meeting of the INC, Sonia Gandhi will also decide the Parliamentary Chief of the INC in the Lok Sabha.

Although the INC will decide the Parliamentary Chief today, the official announcement will be made after the announcement of the Lok Sabha Speaker on the 19th of June.

On the 19th of June, the newly elected Member of Parliament (MPs) will nominate the new Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Until the new Speaker is elected, Virendra Kumar will remain the Lok Sabha Speaker.

On the 17th of June, Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, administered the oath of office to Virendra Kumar as the Protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

The 17th Lok Sabha session began on the 17th of June and will continue till the 26th of July.
