The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday was granted a 7 day custody of the journalist Upendra Rai. The Delhi Patiala House Court allowed the ED custody to investigate a money laundering case.
The ED presented Mr. Rai in the Court today and asked for a 14 day remand. Rai was arrested yesterday a few days after getting bail for another case registered by the CBI.
Rai has been arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA.) The journalist is also accused of extorting money from people by threatening to have information against them. Rai is said to have used his status as a journalist to bribe people.
On Thursday, Rai was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs. 5 lakhs by a Delhi Court. The CBI arrested Rai on the 3rd of May for dubious financial transactions worth Rs. 100 crores. The investigation authorities also accuse Rai of getting an airport pass with fake information and manipulating an Income Tax Department case.
