On Wednesday, the Law Minister, TB. Jaychandra said that the Karnataka government will provide laptops to the students this academic year. The laptops will be given only to the students of poor families who are joining colleges across the State.

“The state cabinet has approved to distribute laptops free of cost to 1.5 lakh students who got admission in government and aided medical, engineering, first grade and polytechnic colleges in the state,” Jaychandra said.

As the decision of distributing laptops would cost the exchequer about Rs. 300 crore, the laptops will be given only to those families whose annual income is Rs. 2.5 lakh or less.

Earlier, the government’s intention to this effect was declared by the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah in his budget speech.

The cabinet approved the State’s new policy on visual effects, animation, gaming and comics. It is to attract more investments in the sector and to create about 20,000 jobs.

“The policy will also give thrust to skill development in the sunrise sector and make Bengaluru a hub for the new software and hardware products,” Jayachandra explained.
