Hyderabad Climate Change Killing 430 Year Old Baobab Tree At Golconda Fort

Climate change is killing a 430 year old baobab tree located at the Golconda Fort in Hyderabad. Famously known as the elephant tree is under threat from climate change and artificial environment. The human activity at the Fort has caused more harm to the ancient tree.

A scientific publication published in Nature Plants calls for an immediate health check up for the historic tree. The 430 year old tree named Hatiyan ka Jhad will require botanists and baobab experts to rescue it. The publication also revealed Baobab trees in Africa have suddenly died after showing no signs of weakness.   

The city of Hyderabad is home to about a dozen Baobab trees. These trees do not show external signs of damage making it hard for officials to spot any problems. The trees decay from the inside and suddenly fall to their death.  

The recent construction around the tree and visitors climbing its branches have robbed it of its natural environment. The Baobab trees were introduced to Hyderabad by the African and Arab traders during the Qutub Shahi period. The Baobab in Golconda in under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Many of the Baobabs tree in Hyderabad were uprooted for road widening and ORR works. Now Baobab trees can be found at Attapur, Secunderabad Club, Ranganath Temple, Vanasthalipuram, Chapel Road and Chengicherla Reserve Forest. All these trees are over 200 years old.
