Making medical history in India, doctor’s on Friday conducted the first successful uterus transplant on a 21 year old woman. The doctors have also mentioned that the next two days are critical and she is being kept under observation.

On Thursday, doctors from Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute in Pune performed a nine hour long uterus transplant surgery. The woman hailed from Kolhapur was born without a uterus.

The Directorate of Health Services, Maharashtra gave clearance after which the surgery was conducted.

The young woman’s 45 year old mother was the donor.

Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, the Onco surgeon spoke to media persons on Friday and said, “The surgery has been a success. The next 48 hours will be crucial and the patient will be under observation.”

The doctors have assured that once the woman recovers, she would be able to menstruate and conceive normally. This successful story opens a new path for women beside settling for surrogacy or adoption.

The 45 year old mother’s uterus was removed using laparoscopic or keyhole surgery. The transplant was an open surgery, informed the doctors in charge.

In 2013, in Sweden, a 36 year old woman had the world’s first successful uterus transplant. The woman recovered and went on to naturally give birth to a baby boy.

Ever since a number of uterus transplants have happened across the world and India has finally joined the list.
