Celebrated lyricist, Javed Akhtar, on the 2nd of May, raised his voice against the law of banning the burqa in India.
Mr. Akhtar asked the Indian Government to ban ghunghat before banning burqas in India.
Mr. Akhtar said, “If you want to bring a law banning burqa here (in India) and if it is someone’s view I have no objection. But before the last phase of election in Rajasthan, this government should announce a ban on the practice of ‘ghunghat’ (covering of the face by Hindu women) in that state.”
He further mentioned his point and said, according to him, both burqas and ghoonghats are not needed and both should go from the society. He said, “I have little knowledge of the burqa as there were working women in my family and I haven’t seen the practice at my home. Iraq is a very orthodox Muslim country but the women there do not cover their faces. The law in Sri Lanka (now), too, forbids face cover.”
The comments of Mr. Akhtar came after a leader of the Shiv Sena Party supported the Sri Lanka Government on banning burqas and asked Indian Government to do the same.
According to the Shiv Sena, India should also adopt the same law and ban burqas, as it spread threat of terror in India.
The Sri Lanka Government, on the 28th of April, banned burqas and all kinds of masks in the Country. The decision of banning burqas came after the Sri Lanka blast, on the Easter Sunday, the 21st of April.
Mr. Akhtar faced a lot of criticism over all social media platforms for his remarks on burqas and ghunghat.
However, he clarified his point through Twitter.

Mr. Akhtar’s statement recieved hatred and criticism from both Hindu and Muslim communities of the Indian society.
This is not the first time India is reacting in anger and trolling people for their freedom of speech.
Recently, Nasseruddin Shah was also criticised for his cow slaughtering remarks against the Indian Government and people.
