On Friday, Mukesh Ambani who is a managing director and the largest shareholder of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL,), declared the launch of ‘intelligent smartphone’ the JioPhone. It will be available for beta testing from August 15. Ambani’s son, Akash and daughter, Isha Ambani launched the mobile.
“The JioPhone will be available to all the Indians at an effective price of Rs. 0,” Ambani said at the company’s 40th annual general meeting.
For the purpose of security and to protect against misuse of the mobile, the customers have to pay Rs. 1,500 as a security deposit while taking a JioPhone. The amount will be refunded after 3 years of time.
From August 24, pre booking for the mobile will commence and the phone will be made available for all from the month of September.
Jio has also declared two recharge packs – one amounting to Rs. 54 which offers a week’s validity while another comes with a validity of two days and is priced at Rs. 24. The phone has in built applications like Jio Cinema, Jio Music and others. Twenty two languages will be supported on the phone.
Ambani, described the phone by saying, “JioPhone is Made in India by young Indians for all Indians.”
“Jio in next 12 months will cover 99 per cent of our country’s population,” Ambani stated.
Mukesh Ambani has also launched a device called Jio phone Cable TV which will be used to connect the JioPhone to any television to watch videos, even if it is not a smart TV. This will come at Rs. 309 per month and it will allow the users to watch videos for 3-4 hours on the screen of a television.
