Karingozhakkal Mani Mani, the Chairman of the Kerala Congress (M,) passed away, on the 9th of April, in Kochi.
Mr. Mani, 86 years old, a senior leader of the INC in Kerala, was suffering from a respiratory issue due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD.) He was admitted at Lakeshore Hospital, on the 7th of March, and was undergoing treatment for the same.
According to the doctors of the Lakeshore Hospital, Mr. Mani’s health was improving on the morning of the 9th of April, but soon, his condition started worsening again.
The doctors confirmed his death and cited the respiratory issue as the cause of the death.
Mr. Mani was the sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Pala constituency in Kottayam district, since 1965. He served as the MLA of the constituency for 52 years.
Popularly known as Mani Saar, Mani also served as the Finance Minister for a long time and presented the Kerala Budget 13 times.
Born in Pala, K.M. Mani started his political career as an Indian National Congress (INC) worker. He later founded the Kerala Congress (M,) in alliance with the United Democratic Front (UDF,) led by the INC.
Mani is survived by his wife Annamma, five daughters and a son, who is a Member of Rajya Sabha in Kerala.
The last rites of Mr. Mani will be held in Pala, on the 11th of April.
