Karnataka Civic Polls: Congress Leading With BJP Lagging Behind

The counting for the Karnataka Civic Polls for a total of 2664 seats in the State. Results were announced for 2474 seats out of which Congress won 925 and BJP 861 seats. The Janata Dal (Secular) party managed to bag a total of 337 seats so far.

The voting for the 105 urban local bodies were held on the 31st of August. The counting began at 8:00 A.M., today and the final results are expected today evening or tomorrow morning.

This civic poll registered a record voter turnout of 68% for the elections of the civic wards spanning over 29 city municipalities. These polls accepted registrations from 8,340 candidate including 2,206 from Congress. The BJP registered 2,203 candidates while JD(S) has 1,397 candidates.

Important thing to remember is the JD(S) and Congress have not ruled out a post poll alliance. This would mean an embarrassing loss for the BJP party.  On Saturday a JD(S) member was quoted saying, “In the event of either party not getting majority on its own in the ULB elections, we will have post-poll alliance to rule the local bodies as we did to form the coalition government in the state after the May 12 assembly election threw a hung House with a split verdict.”

The previous urban local bodies election was held in 2013 in Karnataka where Congress won a 1,960 seats. The BJP and JD(S) were left with 905 seats each with 1,206 seats were independent candidates.
