Karti Chidambaram: CBI Moves SC Challenging Delhi HC Bail Order

On Monday, the CBI moved the Supreme Court challenging the bail granted to Karti Chidambaram by the Delhi High Court. Mr. Chidambaram is the son of Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P. Chidambaram.

In an appeal to the Apex Court the CBI stated it was impermissible for the High Court to entertain a bail plea from the accused. The CBI appeal read, “Further, the high court while granting bail (to Karti) failed to exercise its discretion in a judicious manner without ascertaining the nature of accusation, the nature of supporting evidence and the reasonable apprehension of tampering with the evidence in the present case.”

On the 23rd of March a single judge bench of the Delhi High Court granted bail to Karti. The accused was arrested by the CBI on the 28th of February.

The High Court observed the evidence incriminating Karti is not sufficient to deny him bail. The CBI arrested Karti from the Chennai airport in February. Mr. Karti was returning from London and was held at the airport for questions.

In May last year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a case against Karti Chidambaram. The case relates to irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) fund released to INX Media. The CBI alleges Karti took a bribe of Rs. 10 lakhs to use his influence to gain investment for INX Media from Mauritius.

The investment received sums up to Rs. 300 crores in 2007 when Karti’s father was union finance minister. The CBI raided Karti’s houses and offices in four states. However, both the Chidambarams have denied these allegations calling it a political vendetta.
