The Restrictions levied on Kashmir by the Officials put parts of Kashmir to a standstill. The order of restrictions came ahead of the Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Wani’s second death anniversary.
Restrictions in Wani’s hometown Tral Township in South Kashmir and Nowhatta and Maisuma police station areas of Srinagar is put forth as a precautionary measure to maintain the law and order of the State and avoid unpropitious situations.
Resident of Tral, Wani was killed in an encounter in Kokernag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on July 8 2016. Widespread anger and protests against the Securities Forces and the Indian State broke out in the aftermath of his encounter. The protests continued for four months during which time the Indian state machineries including the Security Forces cracked down on civilians and militants. Long periods of curfews and shutdowns followed.
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), 85 people were killed and thousand others including civilians, women and children were injured.
The separatist groups in Kashmir under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) called for a strike on Saturday July 7 against the forced shifting of Aasiya Andrabi, the Chief of Kashmir’s radical women’s group Dukhtaran-e-Millat (DeM) and her colleagues by the National Investigation Agency (NIA.)
Members of the JRL Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik appealed the fellow Kashmiris to “observe a complete shutdown and maintain civil curfew.” In advance of Wani’s death anniversary, Malik was detained in a police station on Friday. Geelani and Mirwaiz remained under house detention.
Shops and other businesses remained shut in the Lal Chowk area of Srinagar. However, businesses continued in other parts of the city. Public transport was infrequent but private vehicles and cabs were commuting as regular in other parts of the city.
