Chief Minister of Telangana, K. Chandrasekhar Rao has sent out clear directions to the Excise department to issue notices to the cities pubs and bars. The notices are part of a sensitization program to check the sale and purchase of drugs in the city.

An Excise official reported that KCR had ordered them to intensify the investigation and make Hyderabad a drug free city and Telangana a drug free state.

Earlier this month, the Prohibition and Excise Department of the state unveiled a horrific drug racket supplying narcotics like LSD and MDMA to school children.

The officials have arrested a total of 13 individuals who played the role of peddlers in the drug trade.

Officials in a statement said that all the 220 pubs and bars managements in Hyderabad will receive notices. The officials will start with the pubs and bars in posh areas like Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills.

Deputy Commissioner, Vivekananda Reddy was quoted saying, “We are in the process of issuing notices to pubs and bars in Hyderabad city. A meeting will be soon conducted with managements of bars in this regard to sensitize them on the menace of narcotics.”

He further added, “We will explain to them that no drugs or any other narcotics substances is sold, consumed or exchanged within their premises. They will also be told that punitive action will be initiated against those pubs and bars, if any, which are found to violating the rules.”

At the same time another official spoke up saying that they have a few leads on pubs and bars that are used for consuming high end narcotics.
The official reported, “Since the information is uncertain, it does not warrant any immediate action. But we will not take a chance. We want to minimise any of such instances (drug usage or distribution.) Though the department regularly carries out the inspection at the pubs and bars, so far we have not noticed any such act. It is the responsibility of pubs to ensure that banned stuff is not used in their premises.”

KCR addressed a high level meeting at Pragati Bhavan where he said there was an urgent need to save the image of Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister also vowed that no political interference would be there in the investigation. He also told the officials to not spare anyone irrespective of their rank and connections.
