Kerala Floods: Death Toll Reaches 150 People

The worst floods seen in Kerala is causing havoc and has resulted in the death of over 150 people in the State. Unfortunately, this is the present number and is likely to rise as rescue operations continue.

A Meteorological Department (MeT) officer stated the state saw 10 times the normal rainfall in the last 24 hours. A total of 35 dams were opened out of the 39 in the State but there is still no sign of relief.

The Cochin International Airport was forced to suspend all operations till the 26th of August. This is mainly due to the flooding in and around the airport. But the Kochi metro services resumed yesterday evening.

On the other hand, the Education Department rescheduled Onam vacations for the schools in Kerala. The children will now be on vacation from the 17th of August to the 29th of August.

The Supreme Court was also brought into the crisis who delegated the sub committee. The Court asked for an examination of the situation and also watch the water level in the Mullaperiyar. The committee will need to work towards finding solutions to avoid overflowing of this dam.

The Defence Ministry today reported a new set of deployment were set to Kerala for help.
