The Majerhat Bridge in South Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday. Many people are feared to be trapped underneath. A large crowd gathered near the collapsed bridge to help with rescue.
A huge segment of the bridge crashed in the posh area of South Kolkata’s Alipur. The bridge stood over a rail track in Alipur. A sudden crash of the bridge triggered shock and panic across the city.
According to the initial reports, one person is claimed to be dead while many others are feared to be trapped underneath. According to the sources, one minibus and many cars have been crushed in the disastrous incident.
The State Disaster Team reached the spot and are rescuing people from the flyover with the help of the locals. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals whereas the West Bengal Government sort the help of the Indian Army in the rescue operation.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee who is currently on an official visit to Darjeeling tweeted, “We are very worried. We are receiving information from the rescue team on ground. We want to go back as soon as possible. There are no flights in the evening, we are unable to do so.”
