Rajat Kumar, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Telangana, announced, the Election Commission of Telangana will use ballot papers for voting in the Nizamabad constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The announcement came after the election authorities of Telangana wrote a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and informed the latter about the mass nominations by the farmers of Nizamabad.

Approximately 245 farmers filed their nominations in the Nizamabad constituency.
Disappointed with Kalvakuntla Kavitha, the current Member of Parliament (MP) of Nizamabad, the farmers took the decision.

The reason behind the disappointment is the failure of the Telangana Government in bringing turmeric farming under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and in forming a National Turmeric Board. The MSP would benefit the farmers of the District, as they could then get a good profit from turmeric agriculture.

Conducting the elections using ballot papers is necessary because the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can accommodate only 16 candidates, whereas the total number of candidates in Nizamabad is 185.

Out of the 245 farmers who filed their nominations, a few withdrew their names and some of the nomination papers were rejected, due to which, the final number of candidates contesting against Kavitha is 185.

Mr. Kumar said, the ECI will need 8.5 lakh ballot papers to conduct the elections in Nizamabad constituency. The ballot papers would be white in colour and the Commission will need approximately 5 days to print the papers.

Mr. Kumar said, “With the current polling infrastructure allotted to Nizamabad, each controlling unit (CU) can accommodate only six balloting units (BU). This means, they can be used only when the number of candidate is less that 96. With 245 prospective candidates, ballot papers could be needed. (sic.)”

There will be party symbols on the ballot papers. The symbols will be arranged in an alphabetical order, based on the parties’ names, starting with the national parties, followed by the regional parties and then, the independent candidates.

As of now, the ECI has 93 symbols, out of which, 10 are reserved for the national and regional parties and the remaining 83 would be for the independent candidates in Nizamabad.

Telangana will contest for a total of 17 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 11th of April.

The major parties contesting the Telangana Lok Sabha elections are the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The results of the Telangana Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
