Former retired Navy Chief, Admiral L. Ramdas, on the 1st of April, said, he is going to move the Election Commission (EC) against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, due to a statement made by the latter.

The Election Commission is a body dedicated toward overseeing the implementation of the election process. While the Election Commissioner varies from place to place, the rules remain the same. When it comes to issues such as political figures passing demeaning statements at public events, the concerned people can move the EC to find suitable solutions for the problem in question.

Ramdas said, he wanted to move the EC because Adityanath said, the Indian Armed Forces were not a separate body, but were in fact, “Modi ki sena.”

According to Ramdas, the Indian Army does not belong to a single individual. Admiral Ramdas said, “The armed forces do not belong to any one individual, they serve the country. Till the polls get over, the Chief Election Commissioner is the boss. I am going to approach the Election Commission in this regard.”

The comment was made by Adityanath at a public rally held in Ghaziabad, on the 31st of March, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The remark caused a huge uproar not just amongst members of the Indian Army, but the opposition as well.

Retired Lieutenant General H.S. Panag agreed with Ramdas by saying this comment was not a random statement. According to him, politicians have been making remarks like these since the last five years, in order to create a link between nationalism and the armed forces.

The Election Commission responded to Ramdas’s complaint and asked for a report from the Ghaziabad district administration regarding the same.

The Lok Sabha elections are going to be held from the 11th of April to the 19th of May. Held over seven phases, the elections are going to be more than a month long, with the results being declared on the 23rd of May.
