Giriraj Singh, the Member of Parliament (MP) candidate of the Begusarai constituency, on the 7th of May, surrendered himself to the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM,) Patna.

Mr. Singh surrendered to Thakur Aman Kumar for violating the Model Code of Conduct imposed by the Election Commission of India (ECI.)

Giriraj Singh, on the 24th of April, addressed a public rally in Begusarai and said, “Those who cannot say ‘Vande Mataram’ or cannot respect the motherland, the nation will never forgive them. My ancestors died at the Simaria Ghat and did not need a grave but you need three handspans of space.”

The remarks were made against the Muslim community which is counted as the violation of the MCC during the Lok Sabha elections.

According to the MCC, religion cannot be used in statements to address public rallies and conduct campaigns for the Lok Sabha elections.

The ECI even issued a show cause notice to Mr. Singh for his comments.

After Giriraj Singh’s surrender, the CJM issued bail to Mr. Singh and asked him to furnish two bail bonds of Rs. 5,000 each.

Giriraj Singh will contest against Kanhaiya Kumar of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI [M]) and Tanveer Hasan of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) from Begusarai, Bihar.

The Lok Sabha elections started from the 11th of April and will continue till the 19th of May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
