On the morning of the 6th of May, militants threw a grenade at the Rohmoo polling booth in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.

This was the first time an attack like this was carried out while polling was in session. Due to security reasons,  polling is being conducted in three phases in this region. Currently, polling stations for the Pulwama and the Shopian districts of Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency are open.

While elections in the Anantnag district were held on the 19th of April, voting in the Kulgam district took place on the 29th of April. There are 18 candidates in the fray for Anantnag constituency including PDP president and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and according to the incoming reports, there are no casualties as a result of the grenade blast.

On the 2nd of May, militants from the  group Hizb ul Mujahideen, warned locals  an attack like this was inevitable and  those going to vote should be careful. While polling has already been conducted in 4 out of 6 constituencies, polling is currently going on in Ladakh and two other extremely sensitive areas in the region.

The militant group had put out posters with this message across the villages like Nadpora, Karewa and Shopian. While  officials haven’t tested the authenticity of these posters, they are still on high alert.

Stay tuned for more updates.
