Tom Vadakkan, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 14th of March, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
The move of Tom Vadakkan is said to be a shock for the INC and Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the All Indian Congress Committee. Mr. Vadakkan is the oldest leader of the INC, who joined the party in the early ’90s and was always known for his loyalty.
Speaking about the reason behind this move, Vadakkan said, he was really upset with the INC members for their stand about the Pulwama terror attack, which happened on the 14th of February.
Tom Vadakkan said, “I left the Congress party because when Pakistani terrorists attacked our land, my party’s reaction to it was sad, and hurt me deeply. If a political party takes such a position that is against the country, then I’m left with no option but to leave the party.”
Mr. Vadakkan further said, the INC follows a “use and throw” policy towards its members.
According to sources, it is expected, Mr. Vadakkan would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Thrissur, Ernakulam or the Idukki constituency in Kerala.
The BJP welcomed Vadakkan to the Party in the presence of Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Union Law Minister, in New Delhi. Later, Mr. Vadakkan met Amit Shah, the President of the BJP.
Vadakkan joining the BJP could be a major setback for the INC as the elections are only a few days away.
The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled between the 11th of April and the 19th of May 2019.
The major parties contesting the elections are the INC and the BJP.
Stay tuned for further updates about the Lok Sabha elections.
