The Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 25th of April, announced Ajay Rai as the Member of Parliament (MP) candidate contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Varanasi constituency against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ending months of speculation regarding the possibility of Priyanka Gandhi being the MP candidate representing the INC in Varanasi, it was officially announced, Ajay Rai is the choice of the INC.

The Varanasi constituency of Uttar Pradesh (UP) is one of the important constituencies as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting from there.

This is the second time Mr. Modi will contest from Varanasi. Even in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Modi contested from Varanasi and won the Lok Sabha elections.

The INC nominated Ajay Rai for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, however, he failed to win the elections and came third, in terms of the highest number of votes.

Mr. Modi bagged the 1st position, followed by Arvind Kejriwal, the President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP.)

The decision to field Ajay Rai against Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to be a risky move by the INC.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Parliamentary seats in the Lok Sabha elections.

Out of the 80 seats, the State contested a total of 28 seats on the 11th of April, 18th of April and the 23rd of April in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd phase of the elections.
