Kamal Hassan, the President of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM,) on the 24th of March, announced, he will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Haasan, during a function in Chennai, said, “All candidates are my faces. I am proud being the chariot puller than being the chariot (sic.)”

On the 24th of March, Haasan released the second list of candidates and the manifesto of the Party, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

At the function, Haasan said, he will work for the candidates’ victory and the Party’s success, but not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the State.

Speculations of Mr. Haasan’s exit from the Lok Sabha elections were there since the 20th of March, when the Party released its first list of candidates. The list included a total of 21 names of the candidates who will contest the Lok Sabha elections, but excluded Mr. Haasan.

When asked why his name was not included, Kamal Haasan said, he wishes to contest the Lok Sabha elections, but the final decision regarding the same would be taken by his Party.

Mr. Haasan also said, “The announcement on March 24 (Sunday) would have surprises.”

The surprise to which he referred earlier was his exit from the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu will contest a total of 39 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 18th of April.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu are the MNM, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK,) the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK,) the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The INC and the BJP formed an alliance with the DMK and the AIADMK respectively, whereas the MNM will contest the Lok Sabha elections alone.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
