On the 8th of May, the Election Commission of India (EC) declared the polls conducted at 168 booths in the Tripura West constituency as void. While passing this order, the EC further asked for a repolling in these constituencies along with the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
An official statement released by the EC said, “After taking all material circumstances into account, the Election Commission declared under Sub-Sections (2) of Section 58 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 that the polling on April 11, 2019, at 168 polling stations in 1-Tripura West parliamentary constituency against the assembly segments to be void and appoints May 12 as the date and fix hours from 7 am to 5 pm for taking a fresh poll.”
Post the elections being conducted on the 11th of April, the Indian National Congress (INC) filed a petition with the EC saying the elections were misconducted and were rigged.
Reports also said the INC and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was planning to move the Supreme Court (SC) if the EC didn’t take the right call with this case.
While issuing this order, the EC asked the Electorate Commission Office (ECO) to publicise the event as much as possible so as to ensure polling is done the right way. 15 companies of parliamentary forces are also being deployed for the repolling in this constituency.
According to a request made by the police officials in the area, the Ministry deployed 11 companies of the Border Security Force and four of the Central Reserve Police Force.
The fresh polling for the Tripura constituency is going to be conducted on the 12th of May.
